Our congregational theme for 2020 is “Abound.”
Jesus said, “I have come that you might have life, and have it more abundantly” (John 10:10). The word “Abound” means: “To overflow, to have an excess, more than enough, to increase beyond the ability to measure.”
The word “Abound” describes the way God continually blesses.
We acknowledge that He is the giver of every good and perfect gift (Jas. 1:17). In His house there is “bread enough and to
spare” (Luke 15:17). Jesus fed the masses and then filled baskets with the leftovers – a true abundance of provision (Mark 8:8). God is able to supply all our needs according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus (Phil. 4:18-20). We serve a God who does, “exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think” (Eph. 3:20-21).
The word “Abound” also describes the way God wants His people to approach life.
Christians are to abound in hope (Rom. 15:13). We are to abound in the work of the Lord (1 Cor. 15:58; 14:12). We are to abound in love with all knowledge and discernment (Phil. 1:9). The people of God abound in thanksgiving to Him (2 Cor. 4:15; Col. 2:7). Christians are to abound in generosity (2 Cor. 8:2) and in a life that fully pleases God (1 Thess. 4:1).
What a challenge to think about the great God we serve and the great work that remains before us! Let us abound in good works to the glory of God in 2020.
